First 5 Chapters Blog Tour - Character Interview from Crossroads by Mary Ting

I'm taking part in a great new author initiative called First 5 Chapters, where readers can sample large chunks of  novels from their favourite genres for free before they buy them.

Great idea right!

You download the volume of your chosen genre and can then decide which books you love enough to buy. The first volume features six authors who write YA Fantasy:

Carolyn Hockley - Arazi Crossing
KaSonndra Leigh – When Copper Suns Fall
Mary Ting – Crossroads
Starr West – Tomorrows Child
Lenore Wolfe – The Fallen One
Patti Roberts – Paradox – The Angels Are Here

I've been lucky enough to snag Mary Ting, author of bestselling novel, Crossroads, for an interview with one of the main characters in her book.

About Crossroads:
Claudia Emerson has a good friend who shares the same first name and last name. That friend unfortunately dies in a tragic accident during homecoming dance. Claudia is distraught at the loss of her friend, but is even more disturbed by her dreams, which seem to take her to another place called Crossroads. Unknown to her, Crossroads is like a second heaven, a place between heaven and earth. It is where the souls of humans in comas or near death experiences may wander.

There, Claudia meets Michael, a nephilim, a half angel, half human, whom she often meets in her dreams. It turns out that this isn't her first visit to Crossroads, which is an enigma for no human can ever travel there until Claudia. Now the fallen and demons are after her, suspecting she must be special and it is up to Michael and the other nephilims to protect her.

Can Michael fight his growing feelings for Claudia and protect her as a guardian angel should? The answer awaits you. Follow the exciting path to Crossroads!

Character Interview with Austin

We are so glad to be able to talk with you, Austin. Before your story began, what were your hopes for the future?
I really didn’t have any hopes for the future besides being the leader of the venators. My mother, Katherine, she is very proud. She hopes one day I will take a seat by her side as one of the Twelve.

What is your biggest fear?
My biggest fear is that I would disappoint my friends. When I say friends, I mean the venators. They are the only friends I have besides Andrew. You can’t really count him because I don’t get to see him that often and he doesn’t know who I really am.

What music do you listen to most and why?
I listen to all kinds of CDs. Currently my favorite songs are Good Life from One Republic and Party Rock Anthem by LMFAO.

What one act in your past are you most ashamed of?
I don’t know if I’m ashamed of it. I guess I shouldn’t have done it. You see… we can project our thoughts into your mind, creating a mental picture of what we want you to see. I kissed Claudia in her mind and I wanted her to know how it would feel like if she kissed me back. “Short cough” Hmmm…I think she liked it. “Wink”

If you were a regular person, what would you do with your life?
I would go through the school system, date girls, find a job and get married I suppose.

What went through your head when you first saw Claudia?
I could tell right of the bat she was sheltered. Very innocent and sweet. She has this natural beauty and her smile lights up the sky. Or I should say, her smile lights me up. I really can’t describe it. She was like a magnet, pulling me in. I couldn’t think of anything or anyone besides her and that was unlike me. I couldn’t think straight. Thoughts of her consumed my mind.

Do you have any feelings in general that you are disturbed by? What are they? Why do they disturb you?
I don’t agree with everything the Twelve says or does. I’m not sure what we did to Claudia was right. My gut feeling tells me she’ll find out one day and I don’t know what she’ll do or think. We all played a part, whether we thought it was wrong or right. I guess we’ll have to find out what happens.

What is something about you that no one else knows?
I enjoy watching sports. My favorite color is black. I love my car. “Chuckle”

Thank you!!! Is there anything else you need?
This was fun. Thank you for having me. Would you like me to fly you around? “Wink”

That would be awesome! *winks back*

Today I’m thrilled to welcome James Hutchings to the blog.

James lives in Melbourne, Australia. He fights crime as Poetic Justice, but his day job is acting. You might know him by his stage-name 'Brad Pitt.' He specializes in short fantasy fiction. His work has appeared in Daily Science Fiction, fiction365 and Enchanted Conversation among other markets.

His latest collection: The New Death and others, sounds intriguing:

Death gets a roommate...

An electronic Pope faces a difficult theological question...

A wicked vizier makes a terrible bargain...

44 stories and 19 poems. There's a thin line between genius and insanity, and James Hutchings has just crossed it - but from which direction?

Q: What will readers like about your book?
People have said that they like the humour. They've also said that the city of Telelee, which appears in a few stories, is interesting. I also think it stands apart from a lot of fantasy simply because it isn't based on the common template of huge novels about epic quests.

Q: What inspired you to write it?
Some ideas just pop into my head, without me knowing where the idea comes from. Other ideas come from experiences in my life. For example a while ago I found three injured birds in the space of a few weeks. I took all of them to the local vet. As I was carrying one of them, I thought that the woman at reception might wonder where I was finding all these injured birds, and that was the inspiration for my story Lost, Feral or Stray. I've written a lot about cats, based on having been a cat owner.

Of course other fiction is a big inspiration. In some cases it's obvious. I've done poems directly based on stories by HP Lovecraft and other writers for example. In other cases it's more subtle: for example the city of Teleleli or Telelee is partly based on Fritz Leiber's Lankhmar, partly on Terry Pratchett's Ankh-Morpork, and partly on Port Blacksand in the Fighting Fantasy series.

Q. Do you have any new works in the pipeline?
I'm working on a verse version of A Princess of Mars. This is a science fiction adventure story, now in the public domain, written by Edgar Rice Burroughs, who's more famous for Tarzan. Disney is also doing a movie of it, called John Carter, but that's not why I chose it. I generally work on several things at the same time, so I'm also in the middle of a few short stories and poems.

I've been encouraged to write a novel set in the fantasy city of Telelee, which is the setting of a few of the stories in The New Death and others. I have a lot of background for this world, because I blog every day and most of it is setting detail. I also have a half-finished novel called All-American Detectives, which is a combination of a detective story and a story about superheroes, which I'll probably come back to in the future.

Q: Who are your favorite authors?
I don't know if these are my only favourites, but they're the one that probably influenced The New Death and others the most. JRR Tolkien and Jack Vance for the elaborate dialogue. Robert E Howard for the general atmosphere. Terry Pratchett for the humour. and Lord Dunsany for the use of Fame, Time and so on as characters.

Q: Tell us something about yourself that not many people know.
I have three nipples (the third one is a lot smaller, and looks like a birthmark, but it isn't).

Lol! Thanks, James for telling us about yourself, your writing and your extra little friend there.

James' ebook collection The New Death and others is now available from Amazon and Smashwords.

James also blogs daily at http://www.apolitical.info/teleleli

Hot New Author: Johanna Frappier

Today I’m excited to welcome my new best author friend to the blog – Johanna Frappier!

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I live in Massachusetts with my husband, three children, and two cats.  We are in training to be alpaca breeders and are working on weekends to build our farm.  I watch the skies by night for UFOs and beg my favorite psychic friend for stories.

What will readers like about your book?                                                    I've always loved stories that weave in and out of silly, scary, grief, happiness…  I love when the emotion of a character is at one level, then without warning shoots somewhere else-just like in life.  So you’ll find a lot of unkempt emotion in FAIRY CIRCLE.  Just tryin’ to keep this fantasy real!

What inspired you to write it?
My mother raised me on Grimm’s Fairy Tales and fairy tales from all over the world.  But she especially loved Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and tsk tsked the modern vampires that have so many conflicting emotions. This is where she and I differed-I can’t get enough of the modern moody vampire!

Also, when I was nine, my older brothers took me to see some Disney movie at the theater.  After my parents dropped us off and drove away we left the Disney line and I was escorted to the Poltergeist line…  The movie was almost sold out and there weren’t enough seats together. I had to sit with strangers because my six-year-old brother “would be too scared” to sit alone!  I don’t think I can put into words how much that film terrified me, but I can say, I’ve never slept a whole night through since!  I totally credit Poltergeist with the things that still go on in my head today. ;o)

Do you have any new works in the pipeline?
FAIRY CIRCLE is part of a series called, The FAIRY CIRCLE Series.  Currently, I’m giving FAIRY THIEF, the second book in the series, a going over for release on October 1, 2011.

Who are your favourite authors?
Ooooh!  I love:  Clive Barker, Stephen King, and Mary Stewart.

Tell us something about yourself that not many people know.
When I went skydiving for the second time, I pulled my chute and zoned out.  When I was supposed to flare to slow myself down I was too slow getting about it and hit the ground hard.  Luckily, I only twisted my ankle.

You’re a braver woman than I am! Thanks so much for gracing us with your gorgeous presence and I hope squillions of people buy Fairy Circle.

Thank you for interviewing me, Shalini.  I must get back to my book.  It’s my new fave: HIDDEN.

Yay!

Hot New Author: Samantha Towle

Today I’d like to welcome Samantha Towle, to the blog! I’ve had the page-turning pleasure of reading her novel The Bringer and I can honestly say I adored it.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself, Samantha?

I live in Yorkshire with my husband Craig, children Riley and Isabella, dog Max and cat Murphy. The youngest of four daughters, I love music - all music - and dream of a day when …. now that's another story. My first book, 'The Bringer' was published by Night Publishing in May 2011. My second, 'A Single Bite' will be published later in the year.

What will readers like about your latest novel The Bringer?

It’s not your average ‘angel’ novel. It’s full of twists and turns, and I think readers will really identify with Lucyna and her naivety when she finds herself in falling love with James. We’ve all felt the thrill that love creates, that first shot of ecstasy when you meet the ‘one’ and how overwhelming it can be. But Lucyna has never felt anything before now, so she is completely overwhelmed and totally out of her depth with all of these feelings her love for James is creating within her.

I think readers will enjoy going through the journey with her and encountering the twists thrown in along the way!

What inspired you to write it?

‘Don’t Cry’ by Guns N’ Roses. I got the idea for ‘The Bringer’ whilst listening to the song. It got me thinking about the painful effects that love can have on us, then I got to thinking about what it would be like if we didn’t have to feel at all, would things be easier and that is how I came up with the concept of The Bringer. An ethereal being with no feelings, whose sole purpose is to guide the recently deceased to Heaven, who without warning suddenly develops feelings.

Can you tell us a little about your work in progress?

‘A Single Bite’ is the novel I’m currently working on. It’s due out later this year. It’s slightly different to ‘The Bringer’. It’s still a Paranormal Romance, and whilst there is angst and heartbreak in it, there is also a lot of humour.  Alexandra ‘Alex’ the MC is very clumsy with her words, she often speaks before thinking!

Who are your favourite authors?

Thomas Harris, Charlaine Harris, Sophie Kinsella and Paige Toon.

Tell us something about yourself that not many people know.

I have worked every job known to man! From being a chambermaid, to factory work, to waitressing, a bit of modelling, singing, you name it I’ve probably done it!

… and now you can add 'published author' to the list! Thanks so much for letting me interview you today. It’s been heavenly (sorry, bad pun).

Hidden #SampleSunday

He felt the drumming of the earth, the heartbeat of all humankind in his bones and blood, in his skin and soul. It sang a song that he had known forever and in that instant everything became clear. He knew the reason for it all; the key to life and it was so obvious. How could he not have known this simple truth before now?
And then as suddenly as it had come, it left. His beating heart slowed, the song faded and the knowledge slipped away like an elusive memory refusing to come to mind. He felt a devastating loss, worse than if his dearest love had died.
A heavy melancholy descended, so profound he felt as though he should like to sleep for a thousand years. In the cold darkness, tears rolled down his face and stung his cheeks like acid. He closed his eyes and tried not to think. It hurt to think.
It hurt.
God, it hurt.
Like the skin being stripped from his body. He could not breathe and his eyes burned white hot with a searing pain.
He tried to speak but his throat constricted, closed shut. Was he in hell? Was this the fate he deserved? Please, God, no! Help me! he silently screamed. Save me! I promise … I promise anything. I will do anything. Just please … make … it … STOP.
